COURTROOM RULES


General Conduct & Respect:

Punctuality: Be on time for your court appearance.
Respect: Treat the judge, court staff, attorneys, and other individuals with respect.
Address the Judge: Address the judge as "Your Honor" or "Judge."
Stand: Stand when the judge enters or leaves the courtroom, and when speaking to the judge.
Be Quiet: Enter and leave the courtroom quietly, and refrain from interrupting others.
No Interruptions: Do not interrupt the judge or other speakers.
No Arguing: Do not argue with the judge or other parties after a ruling.
Speak Clearly: Speak clearly and audibly so that the judge can hear you.
Follow Instructions: Follow the instructions of the judge and court staff.
No Personal Attacks: Avoid making personal attacks on opposing parties or counsel.
Ask permission: to approach the bench.
Weapons are prohibited: Weapons of any kind may not be brought into the courtroom. Even if you have a concealed carry permit in California, do not bring a weapon into court.

Dress Code:

Professional Attire: Dress in a manner appropriate for a business:
No Bare Feet/Shirtless: Do not appear in court barefoot, shirtless, or wearing a tank top.
No Sunglasses: Do not wear sunglasses indoors unless medically necessary.
No Hats: Remove hats before entering the courtroom.

Electronics & Other Items:

Turn Off Electronics: Turn off or silence cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices before entering the courtroom (except attorneys).
No Food or Drinks: Do not bring food or beverages into the courtroom.
No Chewing Gum: Do not chew gum in the courtroom.
No Photography/Recording: No devices capable of media coverage (camera, video, or audio equipment) are allowed unless prior approval from Judge/Court Administration.
